Why You Should Care about Seeing the Big Picture

Sometimes I get caught up in the little details and miss the big picture. I don’t think I’m alone. 

The Little Details

I obsess over editing out blemishes in a photo instead of appreciating the image captured and spend hours making sure a post is error free, losing some of my “voice” in the process. I fret about the wording of a card and choosing the perfect gift to send at the risk of never getting anything sent.

Sometimes I need a new perspective. Sometimes we all do.

It is important to focus on the steps of a task or nothing will get accomplished. And we should care about presentation to a certain degree. But we all need to step back on occasion and remind ourselves of the whole from beginning to end.

We need to get a view of the forest from time to time instead of always focusing on each individual tree. 

In doing so, we are reminded of what’s really important and can make better choices.

The Big Picture of God’s Message

I believe this is true spiritually as well. And so rather than settling into my normal Bible reading schedule this morning, I focused instead on taking in God’s message as a whole. 

The whole of creation, the whole of the Gospel, the whole of life, from beginning to end: 

• God spoke the universe into being and everything in it (including little ole me and little ole you!). “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).
• The Lord loves me and you so much that He offers us a chance to live with Him forever through the mind-boggling sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
• No matter what happens in this life, God promises to always be with all who accept His gift of salvation. “I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
• Someday, death will exist no longer, and God will wipe away every tear. (He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. “Death will no longer exist; grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer, because the previous things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4).

The Majestic Wonder of God

Studying Scripture is important to know God on a more intimate level. To draw nearer to Him. To understand Truth, to make better choices,  and to live a fuller life in Him. 

But we can get so engrossed in the details of our faith, we sort of set God aside.

What little detail of this life can possibly be more amazing than the big picture of God’s love and grace?

“For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
