Light of Christmas (more than a big candle)

Lights are a significant part of Christmas decorating in many homes. From those strung around the house and trees to flickering candles. And don’t forget the illuminated outside scene.

There are brilliant colored ones and stark white ones. Twinkling ones and chasing ones. Candles in windows and “stars” illuminating the manger where baby Jesus will once again lie on Christmas morning.

It’s hard to imagine a Christmas without extra lights. They help brighten the season.

The Light of Christmas

But if that’s all the lights at Christmas remind us ofa brightening—then the darkness will again overwhelm come January 2. Candles will be extinguished and strands unplugged and coiled for next year. Our hearts will grow cold, and life will shrink to survival.

No, the lights at Christmas need to remind us of a profound mystery. A mystery stretching way back to the beginning of time.

That’s a Light that does indeed brighten December … and every day of the year.

But the Father sent His Son to earth to be much more than just a really big candle.

The Light of Christmas is a Savior who came to offer hope.

The Light of Christmas is the Son who through His willingness to leave His throne, take on our flesh, and die for our sins illuminates the way to the Father.

The Light of Christmas brings life to souls dead in the blackness of their sins.

Now that’s a reason to celebrate!

Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Reflections: What’s a favorite tradition you incorporate during the Christmas season to be reminded of the Light of Christmas?
